Resort History

Mt. Haven Resort

A Filone Family Property

Our humble beginning

Resort FamilyMany People ask about the history of Mt Haven Resort and the Filone family when they visit us. We have been successfully running Mt. Haven Resort since 1966. Three brothers Tony the eldest, John and Andy (twins) and younger sister Theresa from Long Island City, Queens NY with their wives Angela, Lorraine and Tina respectively, decided to take a short trip to the Poconos. They wanted to see for themselves why everyone was referring to the area as the place to “get away from it all”. Only 75 miles from their homes in NYC, they thought it might be the perfect place to spend summers and weekends away from the city and maybe a nice peaceful place to raise a family. Their destination was Gold Key Lake, about 4 miles up Log Tavern Rd to view land for a possible home. They never made it that far. The beautiful wide-open spaces and pristine area filled with little lakes and streams was clearly beckoning. Before reaching Gold Key Lake, they came across a For Sale sign at the top of the road for what was “Hintenberger’s Mt. Haven” They decided to drive down the long road where a woman was sitting on a porch. She began to recount the lifelong wonderful times her family had on the property. The 5 small housekeeping cottages accommodated friends and family for as long as she could remember. Most of her family was gone and others were no longer interested in the property. That was all the brothers needed to hear. The property was theirs within months. For the first few years, “Filone’s Mt Haven” was a destination for family and friends. Weekends and long lazy summers relaxing by the spring fed pool, having great food; playing games of jeopardy and pantomime were favorite pastimes.

Our vision

The family realized that if they were having such a good time maybe it was time to open officially for business by adding a new Mt. Haven Restaurant and building additional lodging. The brothers were successfully running restaurants and clubs in New York and decided this would make sense. Build it and they will come …and boy did they ever. The grand opening coincided with a tremendous building boom in Pike County that brought many people to the area. Mt Haven was open for business with an astonishing 3-hour wait on weekends for dining. Clearly, the brothers had a formula that worked. Great traditional Italian food, nice sized portions and reasonable prices. Never let them leave hungry was brother Tony’s philosophy.

Our Commitment

The Filone Family’s Mt. Haven Resort continues to grow, adjusting to the areas changing landscape. The philosophy of “Great Service, Great Food and Great Prices” remains the constant. Younger generations of Filones are continuing the tradition of excellence. John’s Son, Anthony and Andy’s daughter, Andrea are continuing with innovative ideas that builds guest loyalty and satisfaction. Most of the Mt Haven Resort staff has been with us for over 10 years and some for as long as 25 years. The Filones and their extended employee family are dedicated to delivering a superior guest experience at Mt Haven Resorts. Our family realizes that you have many options. We sincerely appreciate and thank you for allowing us the opportunity to make every visit to Mt. Haven Resort special and treat you as part of our family. We look forward to seeing you repeatedly, making your memories a part of our history. In 2003, we lost brother Tony Filone. His memory and values continue to inspire us. There was no limit to what Tony would do for a guest. Today we feel the same way.
